    About

    ViaVersion is a Minecraft protocol translator that lets newer Java Edition clients connect to older servers, so a server can accommodate players using different client versions without changing its own version. It runs as a plugin or proxy component on platforms including Paper and Velocity, with separate integrations available for environments such as Fabric, Forge, BungeeCord and Sponge. For connections in the other direction, older clients joining newer servers require ViaBackwards, with ViaRewind extending support to 1.7.x and 1.8.x clients; these are companion projects rather than features supplied by ViaVersion alone. Server operators can configure version-based access controls, including blocking particular protocol versions or named version ranges and setting the message shown when a client is refused. Its developer API can report a player's protocol version, and its optional details protocol can exchange information about the client platform, client version, and server version between compatible platforms.
